So I’m using Pinterest to collect swipe (“mood boards,” “inspiration boards”) for my internship, and I just have to ask y’all if you find it as dysfunctional and annoying as I do.

You can’t flip through images. There are a lot of problems, but that is numero uno. The simplest, most obvious thing. WTF, PINTEREST. You also can’t (to my knowledge) add multiple pins at once, delete multiple pins at once, or rearrange the order and layout of your board without deleting and repinning. I guess this is WAY too much to ask, but you also can’t change the size of the images as viewed on a board. So much for attempting any kind of actual composition. Nope. Just an pile of images, all the same size, whatever, who cares.

This site basically sucks for making “mood boards,” which is what I think a lot of people use it for…? Why? Why does it suck SO BAD?

Is there a better online tool for this out there? If not, will someone (“someone,” some tech fairy godmother) get on it? I’m sure it’d be successful. BECAUSE PINTEREST SUCKS. SO BAD.

Design Snark time!

Pentagram has unveiled a new logo for Weight Watchers, and what do you know…it’s a gradient!! You know! Like heavy to light? Fat to slim? Substantial to fading away?

I’m so sick of this particular visual pun. Coke Zero uses it, and I’m sure I’ve seen others.

Maybe I’m over-thinking it, but it’s a little disturbing to me. Not exactly empowering. Shrinking is the message, disappearing. Euugchhh. And aside from the metaphorical implications of the Weight Watchers gradient, I really just can’t stand it visually. It’s a logo that gets less legible from left to right. “WEIGHTwatcheehh…??”

Nope. I’m repelled by gradients. I can’t help it. It’s how I was raised.

…Also, what’s with the logo being all one word, lowercase? Call me picky, but last time I checked the company was called Weight Watchers.

Me with test runs of a fabric screenprinting project I did in class this summer.

The assignment was to design a narrative pattern; this is my “suburban sprawl toile.” The idea was to appear ornate and traditional from far away, but as you get closer you see that the would-be French pastoral toile scenes are actually images of Walmart, Wendys, gas stations, Waffle House, townhomes.

One thing I was set on from the start was a bright, almost garish two tone color scheme. The hot pink was the winner and that’s how I printed the final run. (I had a little bit of a pink fixation this year.) In critique, my classmates said the colors made them feel kiiinda uncomfortable, but in a good way? Which I dug a lot.

“Art in Progress is an exploration of art schools across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

I photograph empty studios in art schools marked with the richness of the activities undertaken by the students. These images, shot with a large format camera and printed analogically, are intentionally detailed, frontal and neutral. They invite the spectator to enter the studios in these schools and observe the freshly used tools of the trade which are perceived as traces that indicate, or allow us to imagine, the artistic experimentations that take place there.”
